Columbus Day or Fall Weekend?

October 6th, 2012

The second Monday of October has been designated as a holiday for government offices and a few businesses.  (But not liquor stores).

While the majority of states and municipalities call it Columbus Day, at least 4 states celebrate a hero other than Christopher Columbus or do not celebrate at all.  It is not a public holiday in California, Nevada, Oklahoma and Hawaii. Moreover, Native Americans’ Day is celebrated in South Dakota, while Indigenous People’s Day is celebrated in Berkeley, California.   Brown University celebrates “Fall Weekend.  Alaska celebrates Alaska Day on Thursday, October 18th.

ABLE offers best wishes to you who are lucky enough to have the long weekend off.  We’ll be at work placing you first.

Most employers are open on this state holiday
